This vivid Okinawan-style design is katazome-shi (also known as wazome), a hand-dyed paper made using a centuries-old resist technique originally developed for kimono fabrics. A wax-like paste is applied through a stencil, preventing ink from soaking into certain areas. Color is layered on slowly, with careful drying in between. Once rinsed, the pattern emerges from the paste, revealing a vibrant and detailed design. Each sheet is then hand-washed, dried, and ironed, resulting in a beautiful paper with a soft, natural feel.
Kamato Red offers a lively mix of stylized foliage, waves, and organic forms in rich reds, greens, golds, and blues—blending tradition with bold, joyful energy.
